They can cheer us up, give us the motivation to clear obstacles, and provide a totally new perspective on life. Yep, we all need a few
memes quotes every now and then (with Instagram, every minute or two). I know for a fact that some quotes have gotten me through tough times.
I guess some would say that quotes are overused online to the point of ineffectiveness, but I think that’s mostly the result of people’s low attention span nowadays. And, some people just aren’t the ‘take action’ type.
I never liked this emotional stuff, but I like to be open. The quotes I’m gonna present here were very perspective-changing for me. I hope they affect you as much as they did me.
1) “If you want people to love you- expect people to hate you.”- Matt from Impenetrable Confidence
This is actually my newest one. I got it from Matt, a friend who runs a very impressive self-improvement website. It naturally contains a lot of quotes. I highly recommend taking a look. Check it out here!
Anyway, what this quote means is that you can’t please everybody. If you try to do so, you end up with everyone ‘liking’ you, not actually ‘loving’ you. You have to accept that some people just don’t like you. It means a lot to me because that was exactly my problem in the past.
Until I started being myself, I’d go out of my way to please everyone. It had it’s benefits (I was friends with most classmates), but it also meant some of the people who I befriended weren’t actually close friends. Only acquaintances.
When I started disagreeing and being more assertive, I naturally lost a few friends. But it meant that the ones who remained were real friends! And yes, it was only a few. I’m just a good pal!
2) “You can have anything you want if you’re willing to give up the belief that you can’t have it.”- Robert Anthony
This amazing quote from psychologist Robert Anthony is my Whatsapp status. I don’t how that’s relevant to you readers. Well, it’s some Makki trivia. When I get famous you’ll have known it first.
Shameless self-promotion aside, this quote really made a difference for me. I used to think a lot of things were impossible. I heard so many people talk about dreams, fully aware that none of it was going to happen. But was it so?
Who’s to say my friend who wants to be a football (soccer, you North Americans!) won’t be one? Who’s to say another friend own a Lamborghini? Or the obligatory third one won’t become famous? The answer is, they themselves are the ones who stand in the way.
My own mother heard my grandiose goals and said, “they’re just dreams.” Well, too bad! I’m gonna get what I want! There’s no reason I can’t be rich enough to go to Disneyland whenever I want, is there? Besides my past lack of ambition, of course.
3) “You’re braver than you believe, and stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think.”- Christopher Robin
Although my all-time favorite Disney movie is Pinocchio (actually, favorite movie, period), my favorite series is Winnie the Pooh. Scoff all you want, the Pooh films (and original books) have some of the most charming quotes I’ve ever read.
This one in particular is one I always think about when it seems that I just can’t do something. When I’m having trouble writing, or struggling to lift a weight, I remember what Christopher Robin said to his friend.
All right, I also keep the first part in mind at night. I can’t help it, sometimes that bump in the night is hard to ignore!
Basically, you’re more than what you think you are. The limits you’ve set for yourself aren’t real. I didn’t know I could ride a gondola lift (fear of heights) until I worked up the courage. Now I always use it. It’s corny, but the moral is to realize your potential!
4) “Then again, if I’m not a wimp, why am I taking the path of least resistance?”- Calvin
Calvin and Hobbes is my favorite comic strip. There has never been a more quoteworthy series. In fact, this whole list could have been C&H, but I hate repetition.
The story here is pretty much evident in the strip. The independent Calvin is bullied for daring to play by himself rather than baseball. So he signs up to play. But he’s right; he’s more of a wimp for giving in to the bully, He just doesn’t want to get teased. A strong Calvin would have kept doing what he wanted (in all fairness, he quits baseball shortly after).
I had really high grades in school. But instead of becoming an engineer or doctor as so many wanted me to, I chose acting and writing/blogging, I faced huge opposition, but deep down I knew that quitting because of someone else’ opinion was a mistake.
I wasn’t bragging or something. “The path of least resistance” is something we choose to take too many times. You need to be confident in the decisions you take, and not get discouraged by the opinions of others.
1) “All our dreams can come true if we have the courage to pursue them.”- Walt Disney
If you’ve read around the site, you’d know Walt Disney is my role model, main influence, or whatever third descriptor you can think of.
The reason I like this quote so much is because it’s what every everyone deals with. We all have dreams. But if they’re anything like what usually counts as a dream (big house, supercar, etc), they’re gonna be very hard to get. Achieving them requires lots of work and perseverance.
Maybe that’s why action is so rarely taken. So many people are afraid of failure that they don’t even try to start a business or build a website/blog or chase a risky career. I, for one, was downright terrified of running a business, until I realized the alternative was not realizing my goals.
I’m willing to bet thousands of potential actors, entrepreneurs, and other careers in that ilk decide not to chase their desires because they’re anxious. Why, that was me until just recently!
Walt himself failed several times before Mickey Mouse, and failed a lot before Disneyland. It didn’t matter, though, as we can see today. Persistence and risk-taking is the key to getting what you want out of life.
Depths of Despair?! Inspiration is Important!!
I’m not gonna pretend to be some motivational speaker or anything. I just really like these quotes, and they give me a nice confidence boost, enough to recommend them to you guys.
Regardless of what quote meant the most to you, it’s important to keep in mind that your situation is not unique. Many of the originators of the quotes you love faced the same problems.
What did you think of these quotes of mine? Do I have good taste? Which was your favorite? Leave an answer in the comments! Or better yet, show off a quote of your own!
