Inspirational Words of Wisdom: 5 Quotes I Live By

5 Quotes I Live By

They can cheer us up, give us the motivation to clear obstacles, and provide a totally new perspective on life. Yep, we all need a few memes quotes every now and then (with Instagram, every minute or two). I know for a fact that some quotes have gotten me through tough times.

Pikachu Quote
Bonus quote!

I guess some would say that quotes are overused online to the point of ineffectiveness, but I think that’s mostly the result of people’s low attention span nowadays. And, some people just aren’t the ‘take action’ type.

I never liked this emotional stuff, but I like to be open. The quotes I’m gonna present here were very perspective-changing for me. I hope they affect you as much as they did me.

1) “If you want people to love you- expect people to hate you.”- Matt from Impenetrable Confidence

This is actually my newest one. I got it from Matt, a friend who runs a very impressive self-improvement website. It naturally contains a lot of quotes. I highly recommend taking a look. Check it out here!

Anyway, what this quote means is that you can’t please everybody. If you try to do so, you end up with everyone ‘liking’ you, not actually ‘loving’ you. You have to accept that some people just don’t like you. It means a lot to me because that was exactly my problem in the past.

Until I started being myself, I’d go out of my way to please everyone. It had it’s benefits (I was friends with most classmates), but it also meant some of the people who I befriended weren’t actually close friends. Only acquaintances.

When I started disagreeing and being more assertive, I naturally lost a few friends. But it meant that the ones who remained were real friends! And yes, it was only a few. I’m just a good pal!

2) “You can have anything you want if you’re willing to give up the belief that you can’t have it.”- Robert Anthony

This amazing quote from psychologist Robert Anthony is my Whatsapp status. I don’t how that’s relevant to you readers. Well, it’s some Makki trivia. When I get famous you’ll have known it first.

Shameless self-promotion aside, this quote really made a difference for me. I used to think a lot of things were impossible. I heard so many people talk about dreams, fully aware that none of it was going to happen. But was it so?

Who’s to say my friend who wants to be a football (soccer, you North Americans!) won’t be one? Who’s to say another friend own a Lamborghini? Or the obligatory third one won’t become famous? The answer is, they themselves are the ones who stand in the way.

My own mother heard my grandiose goals and said, “they’re just dreams.” Well, too bad! I’m gonna get what I want! There’s no reason I can’t be rich enough to go to Disneyland whenever I want, is there? Besides my past lack of ambition, of course.

3) “You’re braver than you believe, and stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think.”- Christopher Robin

Although my all-time favorite Disney movie is Pinocchio (actually, favorite movie, period), my favorite series is Winnie the Pooh. Scoff all you want, the Pooh films (and original books) have some of the most charming quotes I’ve ever read.

Winniee the Pooh
Pooh is my favorite one, but Eeyore is kinda relatable at times.

This one in particular is one I always think about when it seems that I just can’t do something. When I’m having trouble writing, or struggling to lift a weight, I remember what Christopher Robin said to his friend.

All right, I also keep the first part in mind at night. I can’t help it, sometimes that bump in the night is hard to ignore!

Basically, you’re more than what you think you are. The limits you’ve set for yourself aren’t real. I didn’t know I could ride a gondola lift (fear of heights) until I worked up the courage. Now I always use it. It’s corny, but the moral is to realize your potential!

4) “Then again, if I’m not a wimp, why am I taking the path of least resistance?”- Calvin

Calvin and Hobbes Quote
Click the picture to read what happens next! This story is a personal favorite of mine.

Calvin and Hobbes is my favorite comic strip. There has never been a more quoteworthy series. In fact, this whole list could have been C&H, but I hate repetition.

The story here is pretty much evident in the strip. The independent Calvin is bullied for daring to play by himself rather than baseball. So he signs up to play. But he’s right; he’s more of a wimp for giving in to the bully, He just doesn’t want to get teased. A strong Calvin would have kept doing what he wanted (in all fairness, he quits baseball shortly after).

I had really high grades in school. But instead of becoming an engineer or doctor as so many wanted me to, I chose acting and writing/blogging, I faced huge opposition, but deep down I knew that quitting because of someone else’ opinion was a mistake.

I wasn’t bragging or something. “The path of least resistance” is something we choose to take too many times. You need to be confident in the decisions you take, and not get discouraged by the opinions of others.

1) “All our dreams can come true if we have the courage to pursue them.”- Walt Disney

If you’ve read around the site, you’d know Walt Disney is my role model, main influence, or whatever third descriptor you can think of.

The reason I like this quote so much is because it’s what every everyone deals with. We all have dreams. But if they’re anything like what usually counts as a dream (big house, supercar, etc), they’re gonna be very hard to get. Achieving them requires lots of work and perseverance.

Maybe that’s why action is so rarely taken. So many people are afraid of failure that they don’t even try to start a business or build a website/blog or chase a risky career. I, for one, was downright terrified of running a business, until I realized the alternative was not realizing my goals.

I’m willing to bet thousands of potential actors, entrepreneurs, and other careers in that ilk decide not to chase their desires because they’re anxious. Why, that was me until just recently!

Walt himself failed several times before Mickey Mouse, and failed a lot before Disneyland. It didn’t matter, though, as we can see today. Persistence and risk-taking is the key to getting what you want out of life.

Depths of Despair?! Inspiration is Important!!

I’m not gonna pretend to be some motivational speaker or anything. I just really like these quotes, and they give me a nice confidence boost, enough to recommend them to you guys.

Regardless of what quote meant the most to you, it’s important to keep in mind that your situation is not unique. Many of the originators of the quotes you love faced the same problems.

What did you think of these quotes of mine? Do I have good taste? Which was your favorite? Leave an answer in the comments! Or better yet, show off a quote of your own!

  1. The pika pika quote just made my day man!

But seriously I love these quotes, especially DIsney’s. He had a rough path to success (I honestly think it was unnecessary, he just didn’t have much business sense) but now his company is one of the most well-known brand names on earth. Insane.

    1. Hey Ryan! You’re spot on with your comment. Walt was a better producer than he was businessman. His story’s still inspiring though.

Happy to have made your day! Pikachu can get pretty deep!

  2. I love motivational quotes! The ones you listed are great. I’d have to say my current favorite is this one by Henry Ford:

“Whether you think you can, or you think you can’t–you’re right.”

I find this to be very true.

    1. That’s an incredible quote Ian! I’m gonna add it to my collection. It’s certainly article worthy. As one of the most successful businessmen ever, Henry Ford is worth mentioning. That quote is too true. A person’s success depends on what he thinks- he really is his own worst enemy. Thanks for sharing it!

    1. That’s a very motivational quote you got there Norah. Complaining is actually pretty useless. Taking action is much more productive. Thanks for sharing this one!

  3. Inspirational words of wisdom can give us instructions and help to guide us each and every day. These are morsels that help to lift us out of a deep slump that we may find ourselves in. I like secular words of wisdom and I like Biblical words of wisdom called proverbs.

I am an avid Bible reader. Within the Bible there are books called Books of wisdom and they are as follows: Job, Psalms, Proverbs, Song of Solomon, and Ecclesiastes. In the New Testament, the Book of “James” is considered the New Testament Book of Wisdom. The Bible is filled with words for one to live by.

    Thank you,

    Edward Mijarez

    1. Hey there Mijareze! Quotes can certainly cheer us up and totally change our mood. And they’re just words!

Biblical proverbs are definitely inspiring. I’m not Christian, but I think the proverbs are applicable to anyone. Many morals can be found in there.

  4. Wow! A really powerful website and the quotes differ from the usual run of the mill. I particularly resonate with the first quote, so much so that it could be the map of my life. However, using the system that you showcase, I have taken the first step to changing my life pattern and it feels damn good!
Love that you are in love with the world of Disney. I live in Scotland in a fairly big home with my husband, son, daughter-in-law and beautiful, wonderful, marvellous granddaughter. She is a Disney toddler, so much so that she was taken to Disneyworld Florida, at the ripe old age of 1 and is booked to spend 3 weeks in Florida (2 weeks in a villa, and 1 week at Disney Grand Floridian) in 2017 when she will be 4 (on July 4).
Anyone who loves Disney is a success in my book.
My finishing quote – (courtesy of my late Mum) “To thine own self be true”.

    1. You have one lucky granddaughter! She’s growing up in style. What I would give to spend a few weeks in Disney World! My number one goal is to get to a Disney park soon.

But thanks for the compliments! These quotes are pretty fresh for many people. I don’t hang around quote pages very much. I just get quotes from the media I like. Happy to see they helped you out!

That’s a great, simple quote you shared. Thanks for the feedback Lynn! Always great to meet a fellow fan!

  5. Wow! Great set of quotes!
They really get you thinking and make you feel like you should actually strive for your goals instead of just saying that “it would be nice if I could….”
It’s a good ‘ol kick in the butt to get you moving because the only thing that’s stopping you from succeeding is yourself. Most people don’t have the confidence to go after their dreams and that’s why they just stay as “dreams”. We can make it a reality if we believe we can and take the steps necessary to make it come true!

    Great set of inspiring quotes!

    1. Thanks for the kind words Andy! Well said! The idea that dreams are, well, dreams is born out of a lack of ambition and vision. You said it already, but confidence is key. But the most important thing to do is take action, regardless of how impossible the dream may look.

  6. Man that ‘if you want people to love you then expect people to hate you one’ fits for a lot of things, you can’t be very loved without very hated I feel, you can’t just have one, when you’re very loved a lot of people know and not every one is going to love you for who you are.

    Awesome post.

    1. That one is really something. It’s given me more encouragement to express myself, and if someone doesn’t like it, they’re not worth the attention anyway. Thanks Sam!

  7. Love the quotes. All of them are reminders of how brilliant, intuitive, strong and robust we really are!

Recently read this (no idea who wrote it) “Hurt me with the truth………don’t comfort me with lies”

In my day job selling houses, this phrase perfectly illustrates my first commandment. Add the quotes above………….perfect recipe.

    1. I just hate being lied to, even if it’s to cheer me up. The hardest truth is better than the sweetest lie. Good to see you’ve taken it to heart in your career! Thanks for sharing it, John!

  8. These quotes are so motivational and inspiring. Personally, I like the quotes of Christopher Robin and Walt Disney. I used to feel so small in many situations, that I have no voice, and I keep saying sorry for everything. But now, as I’ve changed my mind, everything happens for a reason, and I can’t demotivate myself like that. These quotes make me feel stronger, more courageous to do things. Thanks for sharing, Makki!

    1. We went through pretty similar shifts in personality! The quotes, the Christopher Robin one in particular, always remind me that limits are meant to be broken, and that being scared to do something only means that doing it will get me closer to realizing my goals. Thanks for commenting Jassi, and I hope you continue to improve!

  9. haha I love them, all of you inspirational words of wisdom. In particular I like this “Then again, if I’m not a wimp, why am I taking the path of least resistance?” I really think this gets you thinking about life’s choices, it certainly did me. Beautifully written and presented my friend. Good stuff.

    1. Glad it had such an effect! That quote is not nearly as known as other Calvin & Hobbes quotes, but it certainly deserves some recognition. Thanks for the feedback Simon! I appreciate the compliments!

  10. I love to see a post like this for people to use as a resource and be inspired by. Good for you! Keep it all coming. Here’s one for you, from a song of mine:

“You can’t be brave enough to fly if you’re not brave enough to fall.”

You’re flying, my friend. keep it up!

  11. It seems to me that we have the love of all things Disney in common and that makes me happy. And I know that it may seem childish to some people to like Disney quotes, but actually, they can be inspiring and spot on (I even used a Disney quote in my wedding vows). Off the top of my head I can’t think of one Disney quote that I like best, but the one you have here from Winnie the Pooh is a great one.
One of my favourite quotes is from Anne Frank: “How wonderful it is that nobody need wait a single moment before starting to improve the world”. I love this one, it is so true yet it seems so hard for people to do.
Thanks for all the inspiration today!

    1. It’s pretty cool that you used a Disney quote in your wedding. I agree, they’re wonder nuggets of truth. But I never heard the Anne Frank one before. It’s a really thought-provoking quote though. I can see why it’s one of your favorites. Thanks for sharing Summerly!

  12. Awesome post and great list of inspirational quotes. Honestly, I couldn’t stop laughing at the Pikachu quote!

One of my all time favorite quotes is the second one, by Robert Antony. I really do think as people we give up way too easily even though we may be a step away from reaching our goal.

    1. That’s very true Vinnie. Many people are often way too close, but since we don’t know the future, they’ll never know if they were destined to fail or not. That’s why we should keep going despite what seems like hopelessness.
