How Do People Make Money With Websites?

That’s a question I hear all the time. Mostly by people who really don’t wanna start a website in the first place. Hell, I asked that question a hundred times before I got my first site.

Websites are the heart of any serious online presence. If you want any chance of being an internet entrepreneur, you’re gonna need one.

Sure, there are ways to make money without them, but for actual income, websites are the way to go.

Unfortunately, lots of people don’t see how valuable a website can be. At first glance, it’s hard to see the many ways people can monetize them, especially when you’re reluctant to start one in the first place.

But if there’s any good reason to start anything, it’s money. Specifically, earning money. So here are some of the best, and most prolific, ways that people use to make money off their websites.

Ads (PPC, CPA, etc)

Starting off with an obvious one here. Even the most green beginner to websites and online business in general knows about ads.

The cool thing about ads is that they’re passive income. You just set ’em and forget ’em.

Ads can come in different sizes, forms, creed, ethnicity, and gender. The most well known forms are PPC and CPA ads.

PPC (Pay Per Click)

PPC ads, true to their name, earn you money when they get clicked on. Most ads online are PPC. If you look to your right, you can see a Google Adsense ad that I use.

You could click on it and see how it works…

Ignoring my shameless plug, the amount paid per click varies a ton. It all depends on how much traffic your site gets, what niche you’re in, and how competitive that niche is.

Google Adsense is the most famous PPC ad program, but it’s by no means the only one. It’s not even the best one. There’s dozens of great competitors.

CPA (Cost Per Action)

CPA isn’t as mainstream as PPC is, which is a shame, because I love it. As the name implies, CPA ads pay you whenever an action is taken.

These actions could be submitting an email form, filling a survey, purchasing something, download an eBook, and lots of other options.

CPA payments are usually fixed based on the type of action needed. A survey, for instance, takes some effort, while an email form is instant. Surveys would pay more in this case.

My preferred CPA program is shareasale.com, but there are a bunch of choices.

What I like about CPA is that you don’t have to sell something to make money, but you still get commissions. Speaking of commissions…

Affiliate Marketing

This is my favorite monetization method, by far. I even have a category for it. Look up there, in the menu.

Anyway, affiliate marketing is when you promote products using special affiliate links. When someone clicks on your link and buys the product you’re promoting, you get a percentage of the product’s price.

Affiliate marketing is a hugely profitable income stream. It’s free to join an affiliate program, and the link is yours forever. There’s also a huge variety of items to promote. Actually, basically everything is promote…able.

Nearly every big company has an affiliate program. Amazon in particular lets you promote nearly anything with its Associates program.

Like the ads, AM takes a long time to profit from if your website is new. Once you get steady traffic, affiliate marketing should be first on your priority list.

Create a Product

This takes a while, but the time investment pays off immensely. The product in question could be anything.

eBooks are especially popular nowadays, what with Amazon Publishing and all that. It’s incredibly easy to publish a book, once you finish it. After that, it’s totally passive income. eBooks are a great way to gain authority in your niche, too.

There’s lots of other things you could do. You could make a training course, or a physical product. You could even write software, like an app or a plugin. It’s all worth it!

Sell Your Website Altogether

Fed up with your site? Tired of sinking time into it? Ready to move on to something else?

If you answered ‘yes’ to any of these, you should consider selling your website. It’s kind of a drastic measure, but it is possible and can be highly rewarding.

Website selling is done on places like flippa.com, which is the most prominent market. They make it really easy to sell your site, or even buy one instead. You can even sell domain names.

flippa buy websites
Some sites and domain names can get pretty expensive. It’s like real estate in here!

Obviously, this is the fastest way to make money. Even if you don’t use ads, or sell/promote anything, or monetize your site in any way, it’s still worth something.

You don’t even have to have a lot of content! People buy empty sites all the time. The problem is, they’re dirt cheap. So again, it’s best to build up a website.

This is Just the Beginning!

These are just some of the most profitable and well-known ways people make money with their websites. Make no mistake, I barely scratched the surface.

tip of the iceberg comic
This took a lot more time to find than I care to admit. 2 figures of speech in one!

After starting a website, you’ll be able to make use of all of these (hopefully not the last one), and earn some money. Well, not right away. Traffic is what makes probably all online income streams tick, and it takes time to get it.

If you can be patient enough to grow a site to the point where ads and affiliate links are commonly clicked, you’ll be very successful. Trust me, it’s easier said than done.

Do you have a website? If not, what are you waiting for? If so… um, good! Hopefully it’s monetized! Have any questions? Leave a comment below!

    1. I love product creation as well. It takes a long time, but it pays off the most. If you’re looking for passive income, I recommend you check out my affiliate marketing category. It has all you need to know about what I think is the best source of online passive income.

  1. How I wish I read this a couple years ago! Thank you for sharing your info with us. I have tried some mlm businesses with no luck but now realize that a website is important and can be monetized as well. Great tips for different ways to make money using a website. I found that affiliate marketing and create a product gave me some great ideas for when I built my site.

    1. Hi Sherry! MLMs almost always try to sell you on having a landing page or a very simple website, but it never works. They’re more after your money than trying to help you. Having your own real site is necessary. Glad you enjoyed the article!

  2. Makki great content man, really good walk through on how to monetize a site. This has baffled me for months now but since I have come across your post, I feel like I have the tools necessary to get out there and make a difference.

Have you flipped many websites yourself? How does it work exactly?

    1. Thanks Ryan, glad you found it useful. Once you have traffic, monetization is a snap.

I’ve actually flipped a couple sites. I didn’t have much success though. Only made a few bucks in the end. You basically buy a site, then improve it. Kinda like flipping cars. But with websites, there’s always a chance that the website you buy just isn’t worth a sale. The traffic might be terrible, for example. I’d recommend trying it at least once though. If you keep at it you may find it worth doing.

  3. Thanks for the article. I’ve definitely bookmarked some sites like shareasale.com for when I’m ready to monetise my site. I do like the ideas of PPC and CPA. It just seems like a simple way to make money. I haven’t considered creating my own product but I know that that is when you get 100% of the profits…which is awesome. So I think I’ll create one in the future. Thanks again.

    1. I wouldn’t say 100%. The publisher still gets a share. It’s not huge, but you don’t get all of it. If you sell a lot, it won’t matter anyway. PPC and CPA are really easy to implement, but only take with traffic. Big downside there. Thanks for commenting!

  4. Great advice on ways to make money off websites. I especially plan to work on an ebook! The fact that a website can become so valuable is like owning internet real estate and I would think the more you grow it and it starts to make money the more valuable it becomes. Definitely a future thought for any extra websites I create and grow.

    1. Hey Carmen, nice analogy! A website is definitely real estate, but real land is worth something no matter what. Websites have to be cultivated and developed before becoming valuable. Always look for new ways to monetize! It’ll mean a lot in the future.
